WOOL WEEK kicks off today, the annual celebration of the on-going Campaign for Wool initiative patronised by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Launched in 2010 to promote British-made woollen garments and support the wool industry, the heritage fabric rolled out across the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks.
Vivienne Westwood, who uses traditional Scottish mills to spin her highland tartans explains, “Wool is one of the world’s great natural fibres, famous for its versatility and comfort – warm in winter, cool in summer.” Topshop Unique‘s cross motif jumper has already been spotted on everyone from Alexa Chung to Daisy Lowe, and Burberry’s owl motif knit showed the witty side of the heritage power-house.

EVERY now and then a trend comes along that works not only as a directional style statement, but as one with actual functionality. The synergy of covetable aesthetics underpinned with purpose is too intoxicating – and let’s face it, rare – to ignore.
Supersized handbags hold the key to this elusive fashion conundrum. They look fabulous and in this supersize scale your hard-earned purchase will be hard to miss – but even better, their maxed-out capacity means they can hold all of your worldly possessions.
The autumn/winter 2012-13 runways were full of models carting big and beautiful bags. At Louis Vuitton, the sequinned, leather-trimmed travel bags were so big that they came carried by their own porter who w...

Regardless of how you’re getting to a ski resort, you’ll need snow boots once you get there. Whether it’s walking to the lodge, locking up your skis, or even walking back to your hotel, you’ll have to tromp through snow. A good pair of snow boots is very handy, and many of today’s boots double as chic boots for the apres ski scene. We stick some of the top snow boots for women, children and men that will keep your feet warm, but will also keep you fashionable during apres-ski.
Snow boots should extend at least above the hem of your pants, and preferably above your ankle to keep snow from getting inside the boot.
The uppers of snow boots are usually made from leather or nylon, and often feature sealed or taped seams for added protection fr...

THERE’S something truly decadent about wearing delicately detailed artisan craftsmanship on your feet. And this season designers became fascinated with heels.
On the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks they came in every which way and were highly worked: Filigree cages wrapped stiletto heels at Ralph Lauren; Seventies wood vinyl prints came into play at Rochas; layers of coloured sand filled hollow Perspex heels at Rodate; while models were teetering around on icy stalagmites at Chanel. In contrast to the bright tweed of Erdem‘s boots, Nicholas Kirkwood incarnated his in Constructivist style for the designer – bolting on Perspex blocks with screws deliberately left on show.
Elsewhere, Missoni took the signature hou...

BLAKE LIVELY has come a long way since finding fame as Serena van der Woodsen in television’s Gossip Girl.
Graduating seamlessly from the small screen to the big screen, she’s starred in a string of hit films – The Town, Savages and Green Lantern, to name a few – and in the process has become a regular fixture on best dressed lists for her red carpet style.
Something of a fashion world darling, she’s been a regular on the front rows of New York Fashion Week, starred in a Chanel campaign – she even accompanied Karl Lagerfeld to the 2011 Met Ball – and was named the face of Gucci’s Premiere fragrance in 2012.
In 2012 she wore a bespoke Marchesa bridal gown to marry fellow actor Ryan Reynolds at the Boone ...

ON paper, the idea of wearing a skirt over trousers may send shivers of horror down your spine – recollections of dubious all-in-one skirt and trouser ensembles from the mid-Nineties lurch to mind.
But fear not, before you break out in cold sweats, take a look at the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks for inspiration. Long gone are the days of skorts (culottes masquerading as skirts), this time around the trend has grown up and got sophisticated. You know when an idea crops up on the runways of Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel it’s going to be hard to ignore.
At Louis Vuitton, heavy wool dresses almost reached model’s ankles, leaving only a hint of trouser leg peeking out below hem lines, while Mi...

DESIGNERS looked East for inspiration this season and plundered a wealth of exquisite ideas.
The result? Beautifully brocaded kimono jackets, elaborate obi belts, cheongsam-style dresses in rising-sun red, and embroidery rich with oriental motifs.
“Judo jackets in hi-tech fabrics and graphic Chinoiserie prints in streamlined shapes feel decidedly urban and less ceremonial than in seasons past,” explains Vogue executive fashion director Calgary Avansino. “This is Eastern futurismfor the modern woman.”
