WOOL WEEK kicks off today, the annual celebration of the on-going Campaign for Wool initiative patronised by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Launched in 2010 to promote British-made woollen garments and support the wool industry, the heritage fabric rolled out across the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks.

Vivienne Westwood, who uses traditional Scottish mills to spin her highland tartans explains, “Wool is one of the world’s great natural fibres, famous for its versatility and comfort – warm in winter, cool in summer.” Topshop Unique‘s cross motif jumper has already been spotted on everyone from Alexa Chung to Daisy Lowe, and Burberry’s owl motif knit showed the witty side of the heritage power-house.

THERE’S something truly decadent about wearing delicately detailed artisan craftsmanship on your feet. And this season designers became fascinated with heels.

On the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks they came in every which way and were highly worked: Filigree cages wrapped stiletto heels at Ralph Lauren; Seventies wood vinyl prints came into play at Rochas; layers of coloured sand filled hollow Perspex heels at Rodate; while models were teetering around on icy stalagmites at Chanel.  In contrast to the bright tweed of Erdem‘s boots, Nicholas Kirkwood incarnated his in Constructivist style for the designer – bolting on Perspex blocks with screws deliberately left on show.

DESIGNERS looked East for inspiration this season and plundered a wealth of exquisite ideas.

The result? Beautifully brocaded kimono jackets, elaborate obi belts, cheongsam-style dresses in rising-sun red, and embroidery rich with oriental motifs.

“Judo jackets in hi-tech fabrics and graphic Chinoiserie prints in streamlined shapes feel decidedly urban and less ceremonial than in seasons past,” explains Vogue executive fashion director Calgary Avansino. “This is Eastern futurismfor the modern woman.”
